Ninnescah Sailing Association (NSA)
is very proud of its Junior Sailing program, which is one of the largest
and best-developed programs in the Midwest. The program is open to any

The Junior Sailing program is divided
into two groups, based on age and ability. The "swabs"
and "mates", made up of the younger sailors, learn basic
sailing skills, water safety, nautical terms, basic knot tying, and
other basic seamanship skills. Instruction is both on and off the
water, and includes innovative land drills such as the use of cardboard
boats to simulate sailing on the water. After learning the basics, the
youngsters practice their skills on the water in one of twenty-six
one-design sailboats (Sunfish, Escapes and Sweet 16s) or a 24-foot
Vivacity cabin sloop. Adult instructors and volunteers aboard two
inflatable safety boats keep constant watch over the young fleet. Click

The "skippers" (advanced
sailors) travel throughout the Midwest racing the Sweet 16 fleet.
In 1999, under the leadership of former Sweet 16 National Champion, Ken
Solo, a team of Junior Sailors from NSA took first place in the Novice
Division of the Sweet 16 Nationals. |
