NSA Learn-to-Sail

Have you always wanted to sail but never dreamed you could learn how in Kansas? For more than thirty-eight years, sailing classes have been taught at Cheney Reservoir, 30 miles west of Wichita, and the Ninnescah Sailing Association is offering learn-to-sail classes for non-members and members, ages 18 or older. NSA also offers sailing instruction for young people ages 8-17. (Please click on the Junior Sailing link on the right for inforamtion about Junior Sailing Camps.)

The NSA adult sailing program teaches sound fundamental sailing skills in both small sailboats and keelboats while promoting safety education in all aspects of sailing. This program was developed in conjunction with the U.S. Sailing Association and is taught by USSA certified instructors.

Basic Sailing classes start on Tuesday night with an introductory 3-hour classroom session followed by two full days of sailing instruction at Cheney Lake on Saturday and Sunday. You will sail on Sunfish sailboats, small sloops and catamarans. You will also participate in several brief sessions of on-shore demonstrations and skill training. Students who complete this class and join the NSA within one year of graduation will receive a significant discount on fees and annual dues for the first year of membership.

Basic Sailing course content includes:

  • Basic Boat Handling Skills
  • Sailing Terminology
  • Knot Tying
  • Sailing Theory

The Basic Keelboat class is a one-day advanced sailing course which teaches all aspects of keelboat handling and uses the US Sailing Association textbook, “Basic Keelboat.” Participation in this class requires previous sailing experience or completion of the NSA Basic Sailing course.

NSA members who would like to gain more experience either on small boats or would like to increase their current skill level sailing a keelboat are encouraged to enroll in any of these courses.

Don’t pass up the fun of sailing at Cheney this summer. Experience the exhilaration of the breeze on your face as the wind pulls on the sails! Hear the water lap the sides of the hull as your boat slices through the water! Sailing is a wonderful and exciting sport. And you can be a part of that sport by simply enrolling in a class today!
